Sciatica

Our Non-Surgical Sciatica Treatments

We begin with a comprehensive evaluation of your condition, what you are experiencing, and x-rays. Once we have gathered all the information we are able pinpoint precisely what the true cause of your sciatica is. We are then able to develop a tailor-made treatment plan to most effectively treat your sciatica and provide long term relief.

Causes of Sciatica Nerve Pain

The largest nerve in the body is the sciatic nerve. It is about an inch wide and is comprised of multiple spinal nerves.

Sciatica is generally caused by a pressure or irritation on the sciatic nerve or on one of the nerve roots that exit the lumbar spine from the sciatic nerve. Generally, this pressure can be caused in one of two ways and at two different points in the body.

The least common cause is when the piriformis muscle (which the sciatic nerve runs through in about 15% of the population) actually clamps down or puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.

It’s similar to stepping on a garden hose when the water is on. The nerve signals are no longer able to travel down the sciatic nerve and shooting pain, numbness, or tingling is the result.

The most common is cause of sciatica is when one, or several of the five lumbar nerve roots are compressed or irritated. These nerve roots exit the spine through holes called intervertebral foramen.

The size of the hole or foramen can be greatly reduced when vertebrae become out of place or misaligned when the spine develops arthritis and degeneration, or, when the discs of the spine swell due to inflammation, protrusion, or herniation.
